Prevalence of chronic pain is estimated in Canada to be somewhere around 17%. Chronic pain was most prevalent among women (around 20%), and in the oldest (65 years plus) age group (around 28%). Women aged 65 years + consistently reported the highest prevalence of chronic pain. Chronic pain costs the health care system more than cancer, heart disease and HIV combined.
Chronic pain interferes with quality of life, including the social and family aspects, and with the ability to work.
Chronic pain is associated with the worst quality of life as compared with other chronic diseases such as chronic lung or heart disease.
